The nation and the Constitution was roiled somewhat this past week or so between 1) a seventeen-year-old foul-mouthed High School student (so-called, but he could be 20 years old for all we know) apparently going through the throes of re-enacting the old ‘Hitler Youth’ salute of a clenched fist at a rally, while ranting and raving ‘F-bombs’ at will to the obvious delight of his fellow-students and the TV hosts; to a 2) deflated audience of Trump supporters somewhat upset over his apparent failure to fulfill most of what he campaigned on to become elected president, by folding and surrendering to the hated DemoMarxists and their ilk over an omnibus Constitution spending bill.

Surely We the People as guardians of the Constitution are not really that fragile in confronting little bumps and gulleys on the road to success that we cower and hide, and rant and rave whenever we perceive that the ‘enemy’ (ie the opposition) has won yet another round of humiliating failures on ‘our side’.

Are we?

Back on April 23, 1910, in his ‘Man in the Arena’ speech Teddy Roosevelt had something to say on the subject:

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

God Knows

When God wants to drill a man and thrill a man and skill a man; when God wants to mold a man to play the noblest part; when he yearns with all his heart to build so great and bold a man that all the world should be amazed, then watch his methods, watch his ways!

How he ruthlessly perfects whom he royally elects, how he hammers him and hurts him and with mighty blows converts him into shapes and forms of clay which only God can understand; while man’s tortured heart is crying and he lifts beseeching hands…

Yet God bends but never breaks when man’s good he undertakes, how he uses whom he chooses and with mighty power infuses him, with every act induces him to try his splendor out; God knows what he’s about!

So yes, God bends but never breaks, upon himself our yokes he takes, to show us that for us he chooses and for all of those he uses, there are many such abuses that we’d never ever make excuses; just as Christ our King before us let the heavenly secret out, God knows what he’s about!
