Josiah prays with the homeless man…
Five-year-olds seemingly ask questions non-stop. Sometimes, those queries make their parents uncomfortable—what happens when we die, how do babies get into mommy’s tummy, why are we driving so fast that policeman behind us wants us to pull over? But when that parent can give a direct answer, it can make a huge difference to someone in need.
Thus, when 5-year-old Josiah Duncan recently spotted a man outside a Waffle House restaurant in Prattville, Ala., with only a bag and a bike, he asked his mother, Ava, a question about him. Ava told her son that he was homeless, and Josiah asked what that meant.
After she explained it, though, Josiah – apparently troubled by the idea that this man had no food to eat – had a request for his mom. “Let’s buy this man a meal”, he told her.
“[The man] came in and sat down, and nobody really waited on him,” Ava explained. “So Josiah jumped up and asked him if he needed a menu because you can’t order without one.”
Come, follow me, and I’ll make you fishers of men…
The man insisted on a cheap hamburger to start, but he was assured he could have anything he wanted. He got the works. “Can I have bacon?” Ava remembers him asking, “And I told him get as much bacon as you want.”
Before the man could take the first bite, Josiah insisted on doing something. “I wanted to say the blessing with him,” Josiah said.
When the pre-meal blessing was complete, there apparently wasn’t a dry eye in the place. And Josiah’s actions filled his mother with pride.
“You never know who the angel on Earth is, and when the opportunity comes you should never walk away from it,” Ava told TV station, WSFA. “Watching my son touch the 11 people in that Waffle House tonight will be forever one of the greatest accomplishments as a parent I’ll ever get to witness.”
“Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger .. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” ~ Psalm 8:2, 9
Children think and act differently than we grownups. To a child, everyone is a friend; to an adult, no one must be trusted. See the world through the eyes of a child and this old world will have peace and harmony. This is a wonderful story and a lesson to us all to love each other and care for those who have nothing. The Bible tells us about “angels unawares” (Hebrews 13:2) meaning we never know when we’re in the presence of an angel. Josiah by his action recognized that; he’s a precious little boy and God is smiling down on his good deed (heck(!) I’m smiling and crying at the same time as well!!). “From the mouths of babes”, he has a Christ-like love for people, and that is something we can all learn from. Mom Ava, I know that you are very proud of this young man of yours; remember that it took your 5-year-old to open people’s eyes all around the world. Thank you for not hiding him from the need of others less fortunate. I am sure that his action touched hearts and minds all around the globe…
Receiving the Crown of Glory, while all the Angels rejoice…
As for master Josiah Duncan, thank you young man for being a kind and caring person, for putting in action “what would Jesus do?” or want me to do? I do personally believe there are “angels unaware” in our midst constantly, and you young man, I believe just may have fed an angel. I know you fed Jesus –
“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Insomuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” ~ Matthew 25:35-40

By the way, in closing – In Hebrew the meaning of the name “Josiah” is: Jehovah has healed; Jehovah will support .. Biblical Josiah became king of Judah at the age of eight after his father was assassinated. He ruled 31 years.
