As an intro., Kurt Cobb describes it best in this excerpt from back in 2009 in his blog Resource Insights (link provided at the bottom):
The one thing we know for certain about the universe is that it is unfathomable. We try to come to terms with this fact by telling stories, by creating narratives that are an attempt to abstract general principles from day-to-day events. In fact, making narratives is the primary way in which we transform brute events in our lives into what we call experience. Experience we can remember and reflect upon. Experience is the stuff from which we derive great artistic and scientific expression.[end]
Earth from 4 billion miles…
In his own way, Cobb was trending to explain and include all of mathematics and science as ways in which we tend to ‘narratize’ the world. Scientific knowledge is not a set of facts about the world we live in. Rather, it is a set of inferences based on various related methods of observation, experimentation, test and measurement, inferences woven together into theories that are essentially stories which science tells us.
“I am not accusing science or scientists of being sloppy or imprecise, Cobb opined; on the contrary, they tell us some of the most precise and testable stories available to the culture.”
Until God, that is – Unfathomable – ‘Stories to us; reality to Him’ …

Compared to the scope of the universe, we are not even bacteria. It is so unfathomable and ludicrously large that we can never truly grasp its size. We can get a feeling of insignificance but we are unable to understand just how great in scale all of creation is.
When you can think that everything we create in our imaginations as humans could be out there alive, real, and functioning, it’s a breathtaking idea. Unfathomable, even.
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are? ~ Job 38: 31-35
